A Tahan parquetry lap desk & tea caddy
Each second half 19th century, French, each stamped to lockplate ``Tahan a Paris``, the lap desk with a waved, hinged cover parquetry-inlaid with various woods and mother-of-pearl in a diagonal lattice pattern within a cross-banded border, opening to reveal a rosewood-veneered interior fitted with a divided compartment holding two glass and gilt-metal ink pots, and with a hinged writing surface lined with red moire silk over a further compartment, together with key; the tea caddy of rectangular form with a serpentine-molded, cross-banded hinged lid opening to reveal an interior divided into two compartments with lids; 2 pcs, the lap desk 3.5`` H x 14`` W x 10`` D; the tea caddy 5.5`` H x 10`` W x 5.75`` D, est: $400/600
Provenance: Private Collection, South Pasadena, CA. Condition: Each with general marks and scratches commensurate with age and use. The lap desk in overall good condition, with a few small losses to marquetry inlay, two 3``-long restorations to veneer of top edge of rear, and lifting along 4.5`` of molding along lower edge of right side- easily repairable. Key of lap desk does not appear to function in lock. The tea caddy with later paper lining to compartments, and lacking upright from rear left corner of exterior; the missing piece not retained.
