A tortoiseshell tea caddy & cigarette case
19th century, the tea caddy of serpentine form with a stepped and coved hinged lid opening to reveal an ivory-bordered interior divided into two foil-lined lidded compartments, the whole raised on round wooden feet; the cigarette case rectangular with a slightly domed four-paneled hinged cover centering a plate monogrammed `J (?) W``, opening to reveal an ivory-bordered velvet-lined interior; 2 pcs, the tea caddy 5.5`` H x 8`` W x 5`` D; the cigarette case 1`` H x 5`` W x 3.5`` D, est: $600/900
Provenance: Private Collection, South Pasadena, CA. Condition: Overall good condition. Each with general scratches and wear commensurate with age and use. The exterior of tea caddy with seven losses to tortoiseshell veneer, the largest a 2``-long loss to lower edge of left side, and small losses to lids of compartments; a few pieces retained. The tea caddy lacking key. The cigarette case with a 3.5``-long loss to ivory on lid interior. The push-button clasp of cigarette case does not appear to function. The velvet lining of the tea caddy`s lid and of the cigarette case are later replacements. The foil lining of tea caddy probably a later replacement.
