Johann Friedrich Dieterich (1787-1846 German)
An Empire period family portrait, circa 1830s, unsigned, gouache and watercolor on paper laid to board under glass, paper size: 7.75`` H x 10.25`` W, est: $800/1200
Note: The present work is a departure from the artist`s more typical history paintings. The stylistically primitive execution may relate to Dieterich`s experiences painting in Italy in the 1820s and 1830s, where he was influenced by the Nazarenes, a group of painters who studied and emulated Raphael and the ``primitive`` style of the Renaissance (email, D.B. Smedstad, LACMA Head librarian, 29 February 2000). Together with an original artist expertise statement from Viennese historian and author Dr. Bruno Grimschitz, dated 11 May 1957 Provenance: Zum Antiquar, Vienna, Austria, circa 1957 (see original artist biography on letter head); Private Collection, Pasadena, CA. Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Minor crazing throughout. Tiny specks of instability with scattered losses along the left edge, on the father`s right arm, and a few more minor scattered specks of loss along the lower edge, in the upper right, and beneath the window in the lower center. A few minor scattered surface abrasions. Your bid indicates acceptance of our Conditions of Sale. AS-IS. ALL SALES FINAL
