1049 A Spanish wrought-iron mounted vargueno

18th century or earlier, two associated sections of walnut construction, the rectangular top with an iron mounted fall front with gilt clam shell-faced bracket supports, opening to reveal a fitted gilt, polychrome painted, and bone inlaid interior with an arrangement of eleven drawers and two doors with keyholes decorated with bone baluster and spiral columns and gilt and polychrome pediments, set atop a conforming rectangular base with two short drawers set over a central door, each with its own keyhole, gilt and polychrome painted with bone inlay, on ball feet, 2 pieces, overall: 57.5`` H x 34.25`` W x 18`` D, est: $3000/5000

Provenance: Private Collection, Santa Barbara, CA. Condition: The vargueno: 21.5`` H x 32.5`` W x 14.5`` D. The vargueno and lower cabinet a marriage, as stated. Pine and oak secondary wood throughout. All hardware apparently original. Remnants of red velvet facing visible under iron hardware and strapwork on fall front. Mildew to interior of vargueno. Extensive losses to both pieces due to woodworm. Both side panels on vargueno with splits to timber; split to fall front panel with some warping evident. Upper edge of fall front has been restored. Rear panels on both pieces replaced. The lower cabinet with modern interior reinforcements and a replaced base; feet also replaced. No keys. Your bid indicates acceptance of our Conditions of Sale.
