ASTONISHINGLY RARE AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT ORIGINAL STEIFF ROD BEAR WITH ELEPHANT BUTTON.

Where it all began-almost. The oldest Steiff teddy bear design as we know it in existence today. This utterly remarkable blond mohair bear is rod jointed, the second type of jointing Steiff experimented with at the very early turn of the last century. Bears with rod jointing were only produced for a small number of years and very few remain today. This bear is made from blond mohair, is 5-ways jointed, and has felt paw pads. He originally would have had five black claw stitches on each paw; he is missing a few stitches on his left hand paw. Teddy`s body is very solidly stuffed. His early and lovely face is detailed with black shoebutton eyes, a shaved muzzle, a black hand-formed gutta percha nose, and a light brown mouth. And the piece de resistance, teddy has his original elephant button in his ear, perhaps the most desirable Steiff ID in the world. SIZE: Overall 15"" t (38cm). Sitting 10-1/2"" t (26cm). PROVENANCE: Chuck & Cathy Steffes Collection. CONDITION: Paw pad repairs on hands, a few small holes and divots in foot pads. You can see the red underlying felt lining on the right foot paw pad. General light playwear. For a bear of this age and importance, it doesn`t get much better than this. 1-13811
