After BONIFAZIO DI PITATI ( Italian 1487-1553) The Madonna & Child with Saints James, Jerome, the
The Madonna & Child with Saints James, Jerome, the Infant Baptist and Catherine of Alexandria - circa1890
Oil on canvas
29.25 inches x 46.25 inches (74.5cm x 117.5cm)
The offered lot is based on the painting acquired by the National Gallery in 1886 and which was, at that time, ascribed to Palma Vecchio (Italaian 1480-1528). On the far left Saint James studies the Gosples and has a pilgrim's hat thrown over his shoulder - the brim of the hat features his shell, a cross and Veronica's veil. Beside him is Saint Jerome wearing cardinal's robes - his lion seems to be creating havoc in the background (mid right). Saint Catherine of Alexandria at the right holds part of the wheel upon which she was tortured. The coat of arms above the door in the background appears indecipherable. Below it and to the right are traces of cabalistic characters on the wall. And the background rendered in an expansive landscape.
