Metallic glazed ceramic with integral glazed base
Interior inscribed “Original Designed and Cast By “Beniamino Bufano” For “House Of Graves.” Underside of base also inscribed in glaze script “One of two originals cast by Beniamino Bufano 1948 Alameda Calif N.A.S. by House of Graves.”

Bufano immigrated to New York from Italy with his family when he was very young and later studied at the Art Students League there under Paul Manship whose influence is clear. In 1915 he moved to San Francisco from where he made trips to Europe, India and China. It was in China where he would learn about ceramics and glazes. He began to work in ceramics long before it became popular (1923) and began creating pieces with smooth edges and slick surfaces such as the offered lot. He would later go on to teach (San Francisco Institute of Art –from which he was fired for being too progressive, and later at U.C. Berkley). Bufano was an immensely successful artist in his own lifetime as well as a controversial free spirit up until his death in 1970.
