FRANZ THEODORE KRAUS (German/Swiss 17th/18th century) The Virgin and Child Surrounded by Martyr
The Virgin and Child Surrounded by Martyr Saints - 1716
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left "Frz. Theodore Kraus" and dated 1716
53.75 inches x 35.5 inches (136.5 x 90 cm)
The offered lot exhibits a popular subject of the time, the Virgin Mary and Infant Christ being adored by selected saints. In this case the saints all happened to be martyrs. Most are indentifiable by their attributes. From top to bottom left to right some are, Saint Margaret Mary and the Dragon, Saint Alexandria with spiked wheel, Saint Barbara with Chalice, Saint Giles with deer, the bishop Saint Blaise holding a candle, Saint Denis holding his severed head, Saint Christopher with the Infant Christ on his shoulder (the Greek name Khristophoros literally means bearer of Christ), Saint Hubertus next to a male deer with a crucifix between his antlers and at lower right Saint George slaying a dragon. Generally the saints depicted were chosen specifically by the person or the church, abbey or cloister that commissioned the paintings.
It is known that in the year 1705 the author of the offered lot, Franz Theodore Kraus, was commissioned to execute a painting for the main altar of the Klosterkirche of St. Peters Abbey in Schwyz, Switzerland. It would seem likely that the author of the offered lot was related to the noted painter Franz Anton Kraus (1705-1752) as he too produced works in Schwyz, specifically the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Einsiedeln, located there. However what that relation between to two artists is, at present remains unknown. Yet known works produced by the latter artist, Franz Anton Kraus, quite clearly show influences of the offered lot in both style, palette and composition.
