MICHAEL RIESER (Austrian 1828-1905) The Holy Family with St. John and Angels - 1890 Oil on canvas
The Holy Family with St. John and Angels - 1890
Oil on canvas
Signed lower right and dated 1890
33.5 inches x 44 inches (85.6 x 111.8 cm)
Michael Rieser was born in the Austrian state of Tyrol in 1828. His father was a school teacher and was unable to afford sending the blossoming young artist away to develop his burgeoning craft. However, due to the good fortune of his uncle, Johann Rieser, a merchant in Danzig, at age 15, he moved to Danzig where he entered the art school there. At the age of 20, after having proven himself worthy at the Danzig Art School, he then went to Munich where he studied and worked at the Academy of Fine Arts and then later continued his studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he entered the college under the director, Christian Ruben. It was in Vienna that Rieser gained his first notoriety, based primarily on commissions for altar pieces in various churches as well as a portrait of Kaiser Franz Josef. In 1861, he received an Imperial Scholarship to study in Italy, which he did, residing primarily in Rome for the next three years. It is fair to assume that while living in Rome, Rieser would have come in contact with the various German and Austrian artists related to the Nazarene movement whose influence is clearly reflected in the offered lot. Rieser returned to Vienna in 1865, gaining a position of professor at the University of Applied Arts. Two of his well-known students included Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch.
