Portrait of Mrs. Rosa Diener - 1935
Oil on canvas
Signed lower right and dated 35
28.75 inches x 23.5 inches (73 x 59.6 cm)
Provenance:
From the artist to Ignaz Diener (1887- 1969), to his wife Rosa née Goldberg Diener, to their daughter Sophie and thence by descent to her distant cousin, the consignor.
Ignaz Diener was born near Vienna in 1887. He was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian Forces during World War 1. In 1920, he married Rosa Goldberg (the sitter) and began his employment at the prominent Sacher Hotel in Vienna where he would work for the next 12 years. In 1933, Ignaz became co-owner of the well-known Vienna restaurant Die Drei Husaren (The Three Hussars); which was patronized by the aristocracy, including King Edward VIII (the Duke of Windsor) who in 1938 helped arrange a permit for the Diener family to enter the United Kingdom after the Anschluss took place. The family eventually settled in Berkshire where they opened a restaurant called the Green Monkey. The sitter of the offered lot is depicted in the photograph along with her husband, Ignaz and daughter Sophie who died in June of 2008 in Berkshire, England.
The lot is accompanied with various vintage photographs of the Diener family including a circa 1930 photograph of Ignaz and the staff of the Three Hussars Restaurant as well as other later photographs and letters relating to the Diener family.
