18.1 inches x 23.6 inches (46 x 60 cm)

One of nine children, Jean Dufy was born in 1888 in Le Harve, the great seaport on the northwest coast of France, into a family of artists and was the brother of the noted painter Raoul Dufy. He only gradually discovered his passion for painting, whilst attending exhibitions of works by the French avant-garde artists in his hometown of Le Havre. After his military service, he moved to Paris in 1912, where he met Derain, Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire. Two years later his first watercolors were exhibited, with which Dufy enjoyed great success. Numerous exhibitions followed including at the Salon d'Automne and even in New York. His preferred subject matter included flowers, animals and circus scenes (such as the offered lot) in compositions featuring an incredible array of colors. In addition, Dufy worked as a porcelain painter in the workshops of Théodore Haviland in Limoges for over 30 years. In 1925, he was awarded a gold medal for service at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs. On the occasion of the Exposition Internationale in 1937, he collaborated with his brother Raoul on a fresco for the Pavillon de l'Electricité. In the 1950s and 60s, Dufy traveled extensively through Europe and North Africa, where he found new motifs for his works. Again and again, he also portrayed the city of Paris, its city gates, streets, squares, coaches as well as the Eiffel Tower, the Seine, and his beloved circus. He was versatile in a variety of mediums including oil, gouache, watercolor and ink, porcelain and textiles. He played the classical guitar and was an amateur of jazz, which may account for his paintings exhibiting a more fluid rhythm revealed in the deep blues, animated reds and greens, and yellows that tend to accentuate light. Towards the end of his career, Jean retired to his farm in the Loire River valley where he remained up until his death, continuing to paint the fresh, simple subjects which were the love of his life. Dufy’s works are held in numerous museums worldwide, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne and Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Albertina in Vienna, the Art Institute of Chicago and the MoMA in New York.
