AN EXTREMELY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT SERGIY RADONEZH, SIGNED AND DATED 1912.  In this full length image, Sergiy is depicted in the monastic garment called the Great Skema. He holds a scroll signifying his teaching authority and delivers a blessing. His vestments are shaded in gold and his halo is banded with turquoise and white beading. The gilded background ornately incised with scrolling foliage and the borders colorfully painted in faux enamel. The verso inscribed in Cyrillic, “This icon was painted by Palekh iconographers Plekhanov and P.M. Golikov. August 1912, while doing restoration work on the Trinity Cathedral in the Trinity Sergiveskiy Lavra” Excellent condition. 14 inches x 6.1 inches (35.5 x 15.5 cm).

The names Golikov and Plekhanov represent two of many noted dynastic icon painting families from the village of Palekh.
