A LARGE, FINE, AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE POKROV MOTHER OF GOD, PROBABLY YAROSLAVL, 18TH CENTURY. In the upper left corner, Christ delivers a blessing to a gathering of saints on the upper tier who appear with the Mother of God spreading her mantle (Pokrov) over the congregation gathered below. Below at center, Romanos the Melodist is flanked by the Patriarch Tarasos and the Emperor Leo (left) and Empress Zoe at upper left. To the immediate right of Romanos are the Holy Fool Andre and his disciple Epiphany. In the lower right corner, the Mother of God appears to Romanos in his sleep, granting him the gift of song by feeding him a scroll. Each figure finely painted. The borders with nine saints. From top to bottom, left to right they include: Alexei Metropolitan of Moscow, the Holy Great Martyr Theodore the Warrior, the Venerable Antoni of Kiev, the Venerable Stephan Sabbaite, the Venerable Maria of Egypt, the Venerable Feodosiy of Kiev, the Venerable Nikitas, the Venerable Alexander of Oshevensk, and the Holy Martyr Daria. 34.75 inches x 28.25 inches (88 x 72 cm).

Brusova, Русская живопись 17 века (Russian Painting of the 17th century) Искусство (Iskusstvo) Publishing, Moscow, 1984, plate 66 that shows an icon of the same subject and scope which is very similar stylistically and compositionally to the offered lot, albeit slightly earlier (dated 1697) and attributed to Feodor Feodorov, Yaroslavl.
