A VERY FINE SIGNED AND DATED RUSSIAN ICON, V. A. PAPIOV, 1883. The upper margin painted with The Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah with three inscribed horizontal reserves narrating the scenes above. In the lower right corner The Entrance of the Mother of God Into the Temple also with narrative inscribed below and at lower left an image of the Holy Venerable Dorotheous kneeling before an icon of the Yugskaya Mother of God and behind him the Yugskoy-Dorofeevskaya Hermitage Monastery founded by St. Dorotheous in 1615 and below a short narrative describing these events is written in a horizontal reserve. The borders intricately incised and painted in faux enamel. The verso with inscription by iconographer rendered in Old Slavonic, “O Lord, receive my prayer and bless your work; This image was painted with diligence by V. A. Papiov In token of the 11th of September of the year 1883". And further with retailers label of, “Iconographer and Painter M.I. Yudin, St. Petersburg. 21 inches x 17.25 inches (53.5 x 44 cm).
