BALFOUR ARTHUR JAMES: (1848-1930) British Prime Minister 1902-05. L.S., Arthur James Balfour, two pages, 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 25th July 1898, to Elliott Lees, on the blind embossed stationery of the First Lord of the Treasury, marked Private. Balfour writes, in full, 'I will consider the question of the National Monuments in Churches Bill; but I fear that, as it has not yet reached its Second Reading, there would be grave objections from the point of view of the general conduct of Business to giving it a 'star''. Together with Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) British Prime Minister 1855-58, 1859-65. Dark ink signature ('Palmerston') on a 12mo piece neatly clipped from an official document. Also including Austen Chamberlain (1863-1937) British Politician, Nobel Peace Prize winner 1925. Dark fountain pen ink signature ('Austen Chamberlain', the very conclusion of the signature slightly torn away) on an oblong 12mo piece, evidently removed from the conclusion of a letter and with several additional words in the hand of a secretary. Some light overall age wear, generally about VG, 3
