VON RINTELEN FRANZ: (1878-1949) German Spy, a Naval Intelligence officer in the United States during World War I who sought to sabotage American ships carrying munitions and supplies to the Allies through the use of pencil bombs which Von Rintelen helped to develop with the aid of a chemist. A.L.S., von Rintelen, one page, small 4to, Evelyn Gardens, London, 21st October 1948, to the solicitors, Messrs. Child and Child. Von Rintelen informs his correspondents that he has reached an agreement with the sub tenant of his property at Evelyn Gardens who are going to occupy a room on the fourth floor, explaining 'They have frequently relations to put up, and in particular the young son of the sub tenant's wife of her first marriage….' and adding 'As it so happens that the lady's legal adviser…..is Mr. Frederic Burgis, my own solicitor and friend, no more satisfactory reference could very well be expected'. Together with a second A.L.S., von Rintelen, one page, small 4to, Evelyn Gardens, London, 10th November 1948, also to Messrs. Child and Child. Von Rintelen writes in relation to his earlier letter and explains that his sub tenant's plans for moving their children to a new school has not materialised and that they have instead installed a different person in the property, remarking 'The lady's name is Miss. R. Foster; she is the private secretary of an important aero engine firm in St. James's Street, so that the requirements of all concerned are met'. Both letters feature the official black ink received stamp of Child and Child to the upper left corners, neither of which affect the text or signature. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, VG, 2
