GUILLOTIN JOSEPH-IGNACE: (1738-1814) French Physician, Politician & Freemason who, in 1789, proposed the use of the guillotine as a device to carry out death penalties in France. A rare manuscript D.S., Guillotin, one page, slim oblong 8vo, Paris, 22nd March 1809, in French. The document is a medical prescription and states, in full, 'Use Ipecacuanha powder, twelve seeds. Divide into two equal doses. Wrap in paper. Antimony potassium tartrate, half-seed. Put in two ounces of water.' Some light creasing and age wear, otherwise about VG
Ipecacuanha is a species of flowering plant native to Brazil and other Latin American countries and the roots were used to make syrup of ipecac, an over the counter medicine no longer approved of for medical use in the west. Ipecacuanha powder, when mixed with opium, was used as a traditional medicine against cold and fever by inducing sweating. More commonly known as Dover's powder, it was first prepared in the eighteenth century by the English physician Thomas Dover.
