FRENCH COMPOSERS: A good selection of A.Ls.S., by various French Composers, including GUSTAVE CHARPENTIER (1860-1956) A very interesting A.L.S., G Charpentier, one page, 8vo, Paris, n.d., on the Grand Hotel du Palais D´Orsay printed stationery, to Albert Carré Director of the Opera Comique of Paris, in French. Charpentier states `I send you few sketches for the first and second act. You will notice in Besnard works a goddess quite curiously dressed in apotheosis… with shiny costumes as I expect them. I met Besnard and he strongly approved the Hindu scenery which has a lot in common with the Greek one and has more vivid colours.´; FROMENTAL HALEVY (1799-1862) A.L.S., F. Halevy, one page, 8vo, n.p., 4th December 1853, to Mr. Beauchesne, in French. Halevy sends his congratulations to his correspondent´s appointment as Chief of section at the National Archives, stating in part `I am glad, not like everybody is, but like one of those who appreciate you does..´. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the front part of the original envelope; Victor Massé (1822-1884) A.L.S., V. Massé, one page, 8vo, Paris, 18th October 1863, on the Imperial Theatre of the Opera, to Mr. Thomas, in French. Massé stating `One of my chorists, Mme Cavailles, who has a charming voice and is talented would like to get singing lessons at the Conservatory. Please allow the request as you have never refused protection to talented artists.´ With blank integral leaf; Alfred Bruneau (1857-1934) A.L.S., Alfred Bruneau, one page, 8vo, Paris, 2nd October 1899, in French. Albert Carré (1852-1938) French theatre Director. For over 50 years Albert Carré was a main figure and personality in the theatrical and musical life of Paris. He produced the premiere of Charpentier´s main work Louise (1900) at the Opear Comique in Paris.

Ambroise Thomas (1811-1896) French composer. Director of the Paris Conservatory 1871-96.
