DASSIN JULES: (1911-2008) American film Director. Unusual A.L.S., Jules, four pages, 8vo, Athens, 27th July 1980, to Carine Rueff. A lengthy love letter to his correspondent which he entitles `Who has been loved more than my Carine´, and stating in part `I have decided to let my heart sing because this gift that came to me in this late autumn is so beautiful, so rare, so full of spring… If I am like the immortal drunk who died trying to embrace the moon in the yellow river..´ Dassin further writes in a poetic way about a fantasy full of symbols related to his new behaviour and his thoughts, and further again says `My Carine, with this story I will end this letter because sad thoughts have gathered and are waiting to be heard. I´ll put them off… Forgive me my love for writing in English. It embarrasses me to go to the French dictionary for correct spelling and gender!´ and concludes `I yield to one sad thought. My love, do not ask me about the day. Do not invite me to sunny beaches or shaded walks. I will come when I can. And my heart has stopped singing because I cannot say it will be sooner. I love you..´ Accompanied by the original letter, post-stamped, addressed in Dassin´s hand. VG £100-150
