ESCRIVA DE BALAGUER JOSE MARIA: (1902-1975) Spanish Roman Catholic priest who founded the Opus Dei in 1928. Canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. A scarce A.L.S., Jose M Escrivá de B, two pages, 5.5 x 4 card, Rome, 28th July 1957, on his printed stationery, in Italian. On a boldly and carefully written text in dark blue ink, Escriva thanks from deep in his heart Monsignor Pietro and Monsignor Giuseppe Palarzini for their kind wishes which he appreciates. He further expresses his affection and recommends praying the Lord for the Opus Dei. VG £1000-1500 The Opus Dei is an organization of laypeople and priests dedicated to the teaching that everyone is called to holiness by God and that ordinary life can result in sanctity. Escriva and Opus Dei have aroused controversy concerning allegations of secrecy, elitism, cult practices, and political involvement with causes such as the dictatorship of General Franco. His canonization attracted considerable attention and controversy by some Catholics and the worldwide press.
