1880 Barnstaple By-Election: a pottery jug the neck banded in pale blue and lined in gilt, printed in black with an inscribed portrait of Sir R. Carden, 170mm * Sir Robert Walter Carden was a prominent figure in the City of London, where he was Lord Mayor 1857-58. A Conservative, he fought St Albans and Reading unsuccessfully, winning in Gloucester in 1857 which he subsequently lost in 1859. He also lost Marylebone in 1861 but won Barnstaple in1880, retiring in 1885
