Henry Brougham: a rare creamware tankard, the cylindrical body lined in blue and printed in black with a named youthful profile and seven lines of eulogy, circa 1818, 87mm high, chipped * Brougham was elected MP for Camelford in 1810 where he fought for the abolition of slavery. Losing his seat in 1812, he was elected for Winchelsea in 1816 whereupon he quickly resumed his position as an ardent supporter for education of the poor and legal reform. He subsequently defended Queen Caroline in 1820 and was one of the four ‘Champions of Reform’ in 1832. He was Lord Chancellor and raised to the Peerage as Lord Brougham and Vaux. The shape of this mug and lack of mention of the Queen Caroline’s defence suggests it was made for the contest in Westmorland of 1818. (Medallions with the same slogan were also made for this election) which he contested in order to give him an opportunity to campaign on the issue of slavery (Winchelsea being an uncontested Rotten Borough). See British Commemoratives by Hallinan, plate 107 and ex that collection.
