1826 Lewes Election: a papier-mâché snuff box, the cover printed with a view of the Castle inscribed ‘Donovan For Ever, May the Electors of Lewes Ever be at Liberty and Take Whatever Snuff they Please’ * Alexander Donovan fought Lewes in 1826 and 1830 seeking to challenge the comfortable deal, which had allowed a Tory and a Whig to share the two seats, by claiming to be a more diligent Reformer and Free Trader than the Whig incumbent, Sir John Shelley Nearly beating him in 1826 Donovan tried again in 1830, however Shelley’s improved campaigning turned Donovan’s 169 to 153 lead on the first day of the poll, into a near 100 vote majority against him by the finish

Collection and Shipping: 

Purchases may be collected by prior appointment from London.  The Auctioneer may pack and send small consignments by Royal Mail Special Delivery,  Whilst every effort will be made to ensure litems are properly packed no responsibility can be accepted by the Auctioneer or his agents for any loss or damage sustained in transit by Royal Mail with whom insurance cover will be arranged.

As a guide, packages weighing no more than two kilos will cost between £20 and £30 inland or £40 to £60 for the rest of the world. For larger and or bulky purchases please contact the auctioneer, preferably prior to the auction, for guidance on the costs of shipment.
