Description
GEORGE BICKHAM THE YOUNGER (C. 1706 - 1771)
"Christ crucified between the two thieves: The Three Crosses"
Various early unidentified collectors marks (verso) Drypoint, engraving, and scraping (fourth state of five), 34.5 x 39 cm.
£1,000-2,000
Catalogue note:
The present print by Bickham, after Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam) is held in a Dutch 18th-century ripple moulded frame. Rembrandt made supreme use of the effects of tone, selectively wiping the film of ink remaining on the plate in order to vary the dramatic impact of each individual impression. Bickham's extremely rare impression reveals an exceptionally rich and dramatic work, comparing favourably with the original impression.
