"Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length"
"Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length"
Oil on panel, 59.6 x 45.6 cm.
£5,000-7,000
Provenance:
The Berryman Collection. Brain Koetser, London.
Catalogue note: Bartholomeus van der Helst was a Dutch portrait painter from Haarlem, who moved to Amsterdam sometime before 1636. In Amsterdam, Van der Helst was a contemporary of Rembrandt. He soon became the most popular painter of portraits in the city because of his flattering portrayals in the style of Anthony van Dyck. These representations were more immediately appealing than Rembrandt's dark and introspective later work. Several of Rembrandt's pupils, including Ferdinand Bol and Govaert Flinck, adopted Van Helst's style instead of their master's.
Condition Report:
Upon inspection, the painting is in overall good condition. It has been re-set onto new canvas, with minor surface craquelure. Small section of painting restoration visible in the center of the panel under violet light
