Important Information
Irish art over the last century has neither adhered to a singular “school of painting”, nor to a particular stylistic tradition. Instead, it reflects a diverse range of perspectives, influences, and modes of expression. From the tumultuous years of Independence to the present day, artists practicing in Ireland have navigated a complex interplay of geography, history, politics, and identity. Their works reflect these changes, showcasing a remarkable breadth of diversity in complexity and innovation. Hermans’ upcoming exhibition, Contours, celebrates this diversity, highlighting the works of both modern and contemporary artists.
Central to this exhibition is the concept of contour lines. Contours, both in their topographical and artistic capacities, serve to define boundaries, evoke depth and contribute to a broader symbolic visual representation. Responsive to changes in space, time and perspective, though not without an unwavering trajectory, contour lines provide a fitting metaphor for the nuanced shifts and complexities within the Irish artistic landscape. Encompassed by the imagery of the contour line, its fluid and gently undulating form serves as a symbol of change and evolving perspectives within this exhibition. With the aim of encapsulating a myriad of artistic viewpoints, the collection spans a broad temporal scope and diverse forms of creative expression. From delicately refined studies to bold abstractions, the works presented showcase a range of creativity, often interwoven within the oeuvre of a singular artist.
Contours provides a unique platform to showcase the works of living artists, highlighting the trajectory of contemporary art alongside its modern counterpart. Through the presentation of both contemporary and modern art, the exhibition underscores the transformative shifts that have characterised Ireland’s artistic landscape over the past century.
