The Marquis de Barbezieux was appointed by King Louis XIV to the post of Secretaire d'Etat a la Guerre in 1691, when he was only 23, and he remained in that office until his death a decade later. During his tenure, the King complained to the Archbishop of Reims, the marquis's uncle, that he often neglected his work for pleasure. This portrait by Pierre Mignard was engraved by Cornelis Vermeulen; a preparatory drawing for it is in the collection of the Musee du Louvre, inv. no. 31250.
