Manner of Ambroise du Bois
The Death of Joab
Inscribed in Latin Famulis tuis, quaesumus Domine, coelestis gratiae munus impertire: ut quibus Beata Virginis partus extitit salutis exordium, nativitatis ejus votiva solemnitas pacis tribuat incrementum on the reverse
Ink, watercolor and gouache on vellum
6 x 7 1/2 inches (15.2 x 19 cm)
Unframed
Joab, a nephew of King David, served as the commander of his army. In the struggle for the succession after David's death, Joab favored David's elder son Adonijah. Unfortunately for him, the throne passed to a younger son, Solomon. The new king sent Benaiah, one of David's "mighty men" (1 Chronicles 27:6), who had been captain of David's bodyguard, to assassinate Joab, who sought sanctuary in the tabernacle of the Holy Ark (1 Kings 2: 34). The son of a priest, Benaiah was reluctant to kill him in such a sacred place, so he called to Joab to come out. Joab answered "No, I shall die here." Benaiah returned to Solomon with an account of what had happened. Solomon's response was, "Do as he says. Strike him down ..." Benaiah returned and killed Joab as he clung to the altar.
