Shaftesbury, Dorset
A pair of African tribal bronze / brass figures, one playing a drum, mounted on a hardwood base, 17cms wide. The figures are by the Fon people of what used to be Dahomey, to the West of Nigeria. Its name was changed to Benin in the 1970s but it has no connection with Benin City where the famous bronzes came from. The Fon made bronze figures in groups on a wooden base. This one shows a drummer playing and a woman dancing to the music. No other African tribe made work of this kind. Their work is distinctive because of the human proportions of the figures and the way they are shown in motion unlike most African figures which are stiff and static
