Norfolk Wolf Left. Down-Wreath, Blob Type. Iceni. c.50-35 BC. Celtic gold stater. 17mm. 5.70g.
Norfolk Wolf Left. Down-Wreath, Blob Type. Talbot Die-group 11, dies N/28. c.50-35 BC. Gold stater. 17mm. 5.70g. Left-facing wreath motif with prominent hairlocks, plus fibula at 7 o’clock./ Wolf left, blobs above, bird on rump, pellet below. ABC–, VA–, BMC–, COI 7o, S–. CCI 23.0567 (this coin). Good VF, round flan of pale yellow gold, exceptionally clear obverse, bold bristly wolf, bird visible. A significant Icenian rarity in signally superb condition. Ex Anthony Bate collection, bt. Chris Rudd (2022), ex Gloucestershire collection, ex David Robinson collection. EXCESSIVELY RARE only four others this pair of dies recorded.
This well struck obverse gives a full view of the back of the Sun-god’s head, with flame-like hair curls tapered to flickering points. Below them, his wreath is important. Die N’s engraver gave it upward-pointing leaf pairs (like a letter V), whilst obverse die M, also paired with this reverse die 28, but cut by a different hand, had the leaves pointing down, the other way (for detailed illustrations see Dr John Talbot, Made for Trade (2017) pp 160–165). This matters. Norfolk Wolf wreaths mainly face down: always in Wolf Right (ABC 1393) and mostly in Wolf Left (e.g. ABC 1396). Upward-facing wreaths first appear with the Wolf Left design (e.g. ABC 1399) and cease abruptly at the end of sub-type Ci – to which this coin belongs – before the last, more alloyed, outpouring of sub-types Cii and D, all with downward-facing wreaths. These shifts reflect coordinated arrangements in peculiarly stressful times. Clan treasuries, depleted after paying the Icenian share of Caesar’s war indemnity (54–50 BC), still had to meet community needs and provide for refugees, especially from Lower Germany, where Roman interference was insistent. Sub-type Ci staters - plentiful in their time (witness signs of heavy wear on both these dies) - have a low survival rate, with many recycled as their authors faced spiralling costs in the early 30s BC.
