Selsey Wheel. Southern Region. c.AD10-40. Celtic gold quarter stater. 9mm. 1.17g.
Selsey Wheel. Sills class 1, Crescents/Wheel. c.AD10-40. Gold quarter stater. 9mm. 1.17g. COMF in central tablet on plain field./ Horse left, pronounced arc rein, VIR above, wheel below. ABC–, VA–, BMC–, DK–, S–. EF, neat flan of golden rose, sharp tablet, bold horse. Ex The Royal Berkshire collection. Found Waltham St Lawrence, Berkshire, 1988.New type previously unpublished and unrecorded and possibly UNIQUE?
“The comparative rarity of the type may be due to its almost total absence from Wanborough, with only one possible example from the temple site” Divided Kingdoms, p.380. This coin has in fact to be one of the very first gold quarter staters issued in the brief initial series designed for Verica, and is the only one on record so far that was struck before the two bold crescent emblems were added that distinguish it so instantly from Tincomaros’ identical obverse design (ABC 1082-1088). This coin’s cartouche has exactly the same rim profile and lettering as later strikings after the two gold neck torcs were added, that symbolised royalty and divinity. It was important to make it obvious whose gold this now was, and that die eventually struck thousands of quarter staters in its updated design for the new king. There must have been a scramble at short notice to design Verica’s first coinage to make the all-important gifts that would smooth his accession – was Tincomaros’ death unexpected? – and for this reverse die they engaged the same engraver who cut the dies (around this time too?) for a district ruler in Berkshire (see notes on Lot 30). Same horse, but with mane scrubbed out for Verica; same lettering style; and Commios’ wheel underneath for the sake of those who couldn’t read Latin. Those may have been unsettled times, and it is only from details such as these on their coinages that we can piece together something of these important people’s stories.
