Tasciovanos Hidden Faces. TASCIAVAN [ ]S Type. Kretz type B/II, Sills class 1b, dies 6/8. c.25BC-AD10. Gold stater. 16mm. 5.52g. Crossed-wreath motif with two opposed crescents and four ringed-pellets at centre forming hidden faces./ Full-bodied horse right, two pellets under tail, above: bucranium, anemone and [TASCIAVAN]; hook-like object below. ABC 2553, VA 1680, BMC 1592-93, 1596-1603, DK 496, S 214. PAS: ESS-70CF23 (this coin). Brilliant EF, chunky flan of gorgeous golden gold, distinct hidden faces, well centred. A scintillating specimen of the highest quality. Found Uttlesford, Essex. Unique die pair.
Dr John Sills says: "It's the second known example of the DK 496 type, the only class 1 obverse die where the straight arms of the wreath cross design are vertical and the curved arms horizontal. On the other hundred or so class 1 staters the curved arms are vertical and the straight arms horizontal, as on DK 495 and 497-498. The motifs in the angles are moved round as well, so it would be more correct to say that it was the central pair of crescents that was rotated through ninety degrees rather than everything else. On top of this it's a new die combination, it's from obverse 6, the same as DK 496, but the other side is reverse 8; the only other example, which is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, is from reverse 7. The type is probably an engraver's error that was quickly corrected, but because it's fairly near the start of the series we can't rule out the possibility that it was a deliberate experiment to see if that design looked better than the existing model." Robert Van Arsdell wrote: “A hidden face on an Ancient British stater. Has eluded numismatists for 200 years. Tasciovanos hid the face on his staters – and it took me seven years of owning one of them to see it” (Num.Circ. April 1988, p.78). The two main stylised faces concealed on this superb gold stater are those of badgers, creating a visual pun on the Celtic word tasci ‘badgers’ and thus playing on the king’s name ‘Killer of Badgers’.
