Description
Verica Helmeted Victory Left. c.AD10-40. Silver unit. 11mm. 1.08g. Diademed male head right, VIR in front./ Winged figure seated left, holding branch, rudder behind. ABC 1244, VA 532, BMC 1420, S 135. PAS: SUR-ED2DDA(this coin). Good VF, good quality silver, bold Victory. Found Arundel, West Sussex, February 2023. EXCESSIVELY RAREonly three others recorded, including one in the BM.
When Tincomaros died, perhaps unexpectedly, aged only in his fifties, his successor Verica had gold and silver coinage made in apparent haste to promote his claims and meet immediate expenses. This fine portrait of a very young man on his first pair of silver units (ABC 1247 goes with it and was probably made first) supports the persuasive view that Verica was not a late-born son of Commios (in which case he would now be in his late thirties), but a strapping grandson in his late teens, maybe 20, when called upon to take his uncle’s throne (for details see notes on ABC 1181). This reverse design was probably adapted for convenience from an available Roman gemstone (see Henig/MacGregor, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems and Finger-rings in the Ashmolean Museum II Roman (Archaeopress, Oxford 2004), p.44 no.2.33 which shows a brown glass moulded with the figure of a pantheistic goddess in profile to the right; she has the wings of Nike, wears the helmet of Athena and sits on the rudder of Tyche or Fortune). Verica’s design assures his people of their own goddess’s protection on land and sea. Winged like Victory, she extends a leafy branch of peace and prosperity and seems to be walking on a quayside, perhaps indeed on the Solent, where merchant ships put in.

How to bid via Internet.Our Auction is conducted online via www.the-saleroom.com If you wish to bid you must ‘Create an account’ and you will receive an email link confirmation of Registration. This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction. If you are a new bidder in our sale, please provide numismatic credit references and credit/debit card details to secure any bids you may place. Client data is confidential; we do not share our mailing list or client information unless authorised. Bidding increments. Lots will be sold to the highest bidder for the winning bid. Bidding automatically increases in fixed increments, so you can enter your maximum bid and let our system do the bidding for you. Please ensure your bids comply with the steps outlined below:

£500-£1000 in £50 increments
£1000-£2000 in £100 increments
