Harlow Horned God. Catuvellauni. c.55-45 BC. Celtic silver unit. 12mm. 1.06g.
Harlow Horned God. c.55-45 BC. Silver unit. 12mm. 1.06g. Horned head right with corded hair./ Annulate horse l, large ringed-pellet above, leaf motif below, ringed-pellet above, pellet below tail. ABC 2493, VA 1613, BMC–, S–. Good VF, lightly toned silver, hairy horny deity, bold horse. VERY RARE only eighteen others recorded.
Look at the ewe’s-head end of any well-drawn celestial serpent (e.g. CR 175.7, ABC 1495, CR 189.17), then observe the backswept, slender horn on this pristine obverse die cut by an accomplished artist. It’s telltale linear groove combines with a dramatic eyebrow and under-eye markings to reveal a Soay ewe – an ancient breed whose thick fleece falls naturally into long twisted hanks, just like the hair on this head, when lambs have been born and the valuable wool is ripe for rooing and spinning. This has to be the tribal goddess, drawn as if from life, wearing the wealth of Summer in her hair amidst bright solar discs that you see on off-centre strikes. Nature’s bounty echoes in the reverse design’s solar mare with thick woolly mane and wispy leaf-like tail. The goddess’s heavy diadem with rope-like rim has a high, ornamented brow-piece seen exceptionally clearly here beyond the horn, and a large celestial orb at the back. Together these remind us that any people’s goddess might also wear a helmet, in Classical style, to protect them. A beaded crest arched from brow to tailpiece (seen CR115.41), echoing her companion serpent’s typical body. But whose was she? When she appears in Hampshire she has different local details (ABC 866). Here, what must be a dominant Catuvellaunian family’s distinctive vegetal emblem, tipped with rings or pellets, first appears in Cassivellaunus’ lifetime (DK 442), develops with Addedomaros (e.g. ABC 2529, Lot 28) and Tasciovanos (e.g. ABC 2583), and finally morphs into Cunobelinus’ barley ear (e.g. Lot 31). Findspots and style make Addedomaros the most likely author of this beautiful silver coinage. A magnificent example of an elusive type, we haven’t sold one in our lists since 2016.
