Description
North East Coast. Thin Line Type (formerly ‘North East Five Legs’). Sills Mint A, Late Transitional. Corieltauvi. c.45 BC. Gold stater. 18mm. 5.68g. Wreath motif with inward-facing leaves, V-cusp crescents (eyes of hidden face), serpentine hair-curl, thin hairbar, thin cloak-lines./ Sinuous disarticulated horse standing left, thin line between hind legs, charioteer’s arms above, bisected by thin vertical line, solar rosette below. ABC–, VA–, BMC–, S–. CCI 93.0329 (this coin). Good VF, neat round flan of rose gold, boldly struck to clearly reveal important details of transitional design. A numismatically notable pedigree piece. Ex The Royal Berkshire collection, bt. Chris Rudd 1993, ex Chris Rudd Celtic collection, bt. Glendinings, 6.11.1991, Lot 162, ex H.R.Mossop collection, bt. Glendining's 14.7.1977, Lot 256. EXTREMELY RARE type, only six others recorded. EXCESSIVELY RARE reverse die, only one other known.
This extraordinary and extremely rare Thin Line Type (CR called it ‘North East Five Legs’ when it was in his private collection) is a cross-over coin bridging the North East Coast and South Ferriby series, which are of course really one extensive series. Dr John Sills says: “It appears briefly towards the end of the North East Coast series at Mint A and anticipates the South Ferriby type that follows. South Ferriby staters are usually defined by the star below the horse, but the other main element is a shaft that’s added to the charioteer motif above the body, turning it into an anchor-like symbol” (pers.comm. 21.2.2023). Dr Daphne Nash Briggs, author of Coinage in the Celtic World (Seaby 1987, Spink 2004) says: “Coin production in this large region had always been tightly controlled, and a fixed stock of essentially celestial symbols, constantly rearranged, seem to have served as series and issue markers, even perhaps as senior officials' personal signatures. These include variants of the abstract charioteer and a serpentine obverse symbol, seen very clearly here to the left of the “hidden face”, like a hair-curl, that was also to reappear in the South Ferriby series, where it was reworked as a serpent and reversed at new northern mint C (ABC 1743 and Sills CR List 118, 2011, p.4).” (pers.comm. 23.2.2023).
