Cunobelinus Biga. Sills class 1, dies 5/6. Kretz class B2. c.AD 1-8. Gold quarter stater. 12mm. 1.36g. CAMVLmonogram in rectangular panel with concave sides, ring at end, crossed by vertical beaded-wreath motif, heart-shaped hidden face in bottom left quarter./ Two Roman-style horses galloping left, four-spoked wheel and CVNO below, beaded border. ABC 2807, VA 1913, BMC 1836-36A, DK 574, S 290. Good VF, rose gold, full ‘heart face’, bold biga. VERY RARE type, EXTREMELY RARE this pair of dies, only 12 others recorded.
When the young Cunobelinus took charge at Camulodunon in c. AD 1-5, his first gold coinage was bold and triumphant, lavishly produced and distributed to sweeten his welcome in Trinovantian lands from which his Catuvellaunian father, Tasciovanos (still alive), had been excluded. He may even have won this coveted prize by strategic marriage into the Trinovantian ruling house (see Chris Rudd List 177.33). The little heart-face emblem on opposite diagonals in his obverse design - usually with a central “nose” between the “eyes” (eg. ABC 2807, same die, top right) - is an ambiguous symbol that may well evoke the town’s patron god, Camulos, but can also be seen as symbolic of propitious sexual union (swan-heads in their courtship dance; phallus and testicles inside a vulva). This particular pair of dies opened an especially intensive burst of quarter-stater production for distribution mainly within the territory (DK p.636), and on its tiny obverse die Cunobelinus’ best and most literate engraver has linked four Roman letters into a fashionable, space-saving monogram.

How to bid via Internet.Our Auction is conducted online via www.the-saleroom.com If you wish to bid you must ‘Create an account’ and you will receive an email link confirmation of Registration. This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction. Bidding increments. Lots will be sold to the highest bidder for the winning bid. Bidding automatically increases in fixed increments, so you can enter your maximum bid and let our system do the bidding for you. Please ensure your bids comply with the steps outlined below:
