Cunobelinus Metalworker. c.AD 8-41. Bronze unit. 16-18mm. 2.39g. Winged head left, youthful and beardless, CVNO in front, BELIN behind, all in beaded circle./ Smith seated right in chair with upright back, L-shaped hammer in his right hand, beating a metal vessel held by the rim in his left hand, TASCIO behind, all in beaded circle. ABC 2969, VA 2097, BMC 1972-83, S 347. CCI 67.0252 (this coin). EF, beautifully struck on an extra large flan, revealing entire beaded circle on both sides exquisitely sculpted head, meticulously detailed metalworker, full and flawless inscription, delightful dark-brown patina. A well documented, pedigree coin in immaculate condition, among the finest of 330 recorded, 122 of which came from the Romano-British temple site at Harlow, Essex. Ex The Royal Berkshire collection, bt. Spink 1992, ex R.P.Mack collection, bt. Spink 18 January 1956, probably ex T C Brooks collection (sold by Sotheby’s in 1947 and 1948).
Mack’s Metalworker is magnificent – magnificent in its mythology, archaeology and symbology; magnificent in its magnanimous flan, numismatic ancestry and incredibly fine condition. The winged head may be modelled on Medusa (cf. RCV 331), but we think it’s more likely to be Mercury, the Roman equivalent of Lugus ‘the shining one’ (like Cuno’s namesake, Belenos), master of crafts (including metalworking), and legendary founder of Lugdunum (Lyon, France), where he figured prominently as a hammer-god. This tallies well with the British smith-god on the reverse (Camulos as Lugus?). Curiously, perhaps coincidentally, the vessel he is hammering is identical in shape (though not size) to two silver cups, imported from Italy and found at Welwyn, Herts., in 1906.
