Bodvoc Young Head. Dobunni. c.25-5 BC? Celtic silver unit. 12-14mm. 0.99g.
Bodvoc Young Head. c.25-5 BC? Silver unit. 12-14mm. 0.99g. Head left, elliptical eye, short dashes for hair, BOD[VOC] in front, beaded border./ Horse right, ringed-pellet above, pellets around, star in front, large beaded ring below. ABC 2042, VA 1057, BMC 3143-45, S 389.PAS: BM-0EF3EE (this coin). Good VF, lightly toned silver, great head, sharp horse, bold beaded ring. Found Devizes, Wiltshire. RARE only 34 others recorded.
This is a great example of a rare coin of a rare ruler and a Tasciovanos lookalike. The head comes from a Tasciovanos bronze (ABC 2676); the horse, rosette and ringed-pellet from a Tasciovanos gold stater (perhaps ABC 2574). In Chris Rudd List 76 (July 2004) Dr Philip de Jersey commented on this type as follows: “Sir John Evans (The coins of the ancient Britons, 1864, pp. 136-139) discusses the Bodvoc silver unit in some considerable detail, before concluding that “unsatisfactory as it may appear, the whole that can certainly be predicated of these coins is that they were struck in the Western part of England at a rather late period of the British coinage. To this may be added the probability that on them is preserved a portion, or possibly the whole of the name of some prince, and that he reigned over the Boduni.” Yet again it’s arguable that our views have not altered all that much with the benefit of nearly 160 years of scholarship.
