Tincomarus Alton. Sills class 1, dies 1/2. c.25BC-AD10. Gold stater. 16-18mm. 5.46g. Wreath motif with hidden faces, snake’s head at 1 o’clock./ Disjointed triple-tailed horse right, serpent and TINCO above, MA below, tip of RV[S] in front, trefoil under head. ABC 1052, VA−, BMC 765, DK 327, S−. CCI 96.2692 (this coin). Good EF, gorgeous golden gold, lovely wreath with snake head clearly visible, sharp legend. Found near Chichester, West Sussex, 5.10.1988. EXTREMELY RARE only 12 others recorded, including two in the British Museum.
Of the thirteen Tincomarus Alton gold staters recorded this is unquestionably one of the finest. This is of course a somewhat subjective judgement because most of the thirteen known examples are in excellent condition. However, we feel that we are in a better position than most to assess their relative merits because we have handled more Tincomarus Alton staters than anyone else and looked more closely at them than any other dealer or auction house. Indeed this sensational specimen is the sixth that we have had the pleasure and privilege of selling. Both sides of the coin are well centred; every part of the design is struck in high relief from freshly cut dies; most of the inscription is clearly displayed; and all the surfaces of the coin are in a pristine state. Moreover, this spectacular example displays a great hidden face on the obverse, with the hairbar as its nose. There’s another face at 12 o’clock (crescent eyebrows both visible) which incorporates a sinuous snake with open jaws. Equally important, this is a Tincomarus Alton stater that comes with impeccable credentials. We know the finder (he first contacted us in 1996). We know precisely where and when he unearthed this stunning stater (we’re keeping the findspot secret for security reasons) and we know he had the landowner’s permission. Like the other five Tincomarus Alton staters we’ve sold, this one has been registered with the Celtic Coin Index at the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford (60th anniversary to be celebrated in March this year) and published by Dr John Sills in his monumental Divided Kingdoms, pages 348 and 358 (this coin).
