Freckenham Crescents. Ring and Star Type. Talbot BHB stater, dies C/6. Iceni. c.5 BC-AD 5. Gold stater. 18mm. 5.38g. Back to back crescents, pellet triad above, row of pellets either side./ Annular horse right, pellet triad on chest, corded mane, beaded ring enclosing pellet triad above, pellet triad either side, six-pointed star below. ABC 1447, VA 620-7, BMC 3386-88, S 426. EF, sharp strike, beautifully ornamented horse, amazing detail. Ex Gloucestershire collection. Found Norfolk. VERY RARE only 22 others recorded.
This coin was struck from a pair of dies early in Dr John Talbot’s group 1 of Boar Horse B staters (see Made for Trade p. 184 for a vivid pictorial guide): obverse die C was reaching the end of its usefulness and reverse die 6 had been refreshed. Whilst its design, at a glance, owes something to Catuvellaunian formats, (on which see ‘Did Cunobelin control the Iceni?’ Chris Rudd List 102, pp.2-6), it is also very much their own. Icenian back-to-back crescents surely represent - for them - the twin watersheds of lands that drain in opposite directions, dividing north of Diss. The ledge on which they stand - a practical device to prevent the flan slipping on the anvil - was positioned to look like a horizon. Conspicuous solar and astral symbols on both sides relate to beliefs that united an uncommonly disparate people, and their totem tribal mare, with emblematic barley-corn shoulder motif on a sun-disc - is a strong chariot pony, is skillfully depicted at a brisk gallop, ears pricked, tail streaming (you can see three of its four strands flying at the left). This engraver, who obviously had a feel for horses, makes her mane suggest how her head bobs as she plunges, and has reinforced one conventional stylistic detail – originally an open-mouthed muzzle - to make her look just like she has broken free from someone’s hand, still in her halter, “Catch me if you can”. Nobody really controlled the Iceni.

This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction.
