Snettisham Corn Ears. Talbot Early Snettisham Quarter Stater, dies B/2. c.40-35 BC. Celtic gold quarter stater. 10mm. 1.11g. Corn ear wreath above and below ringed-pellet, within two plain lines, to side beaded crescent and ringed-pellets./ Annulate horse right with beaded mane, pellets on chest, beaded ringed-pellet below and in front. ABC 1465, VA−, BMC 3435, S−. Good VF, neat flan of golden gold, stunning sharp strike. EXTREMELY RARE only six others recorded.
Much rarer than the regular Snettisham type, with just six others recorded including one in the British Museum (BMC 3435). The obverse design in particular was a great deal larger than the flan, and even on the biggest surviving example little more than half of the design is visible. What is shown is unusually ornate, with one or possibly two beaded lines forming the border to the coin, within which is the corn-ear wreath with beaded crescents and pellets or rings to each side. Perhaps the engraver was more comfortable with this tracery than with the horse: it in comparison, is very two-dimensional, stiff in appearance and with just a single rear leg and foreleg. Dr John Talbot, author of Made for Trade: A New View of Icenian Coinage (Oxbow 2017) says: “A nice example of an extremely rare coin.”

Bidding increments. Lots will be sold to the highest bidder for the winning bid. Bidding automatically increases in fixed increments, so you can enter your maximum bid and let our system do the bidding for you. Please ensure your bids comply with the steps outlined below:
