Bodvoc Bold.c.25-5 BC. Gold stater. 19mm. 5.49g. BODVOC on plain field./ Triple-tailed horse right, crescent and two ringed-pellets above forming sad hidden face, tiny x below head, pellet triad behind, tiny x and wheel below. ABC 2039, VA 1052, BMC 3135-42, S 388. CCI 10.2790 (this coin). EF/Near EF, big flan of rich rose gold, boldly branded. One of the best inscriptions we’ve seen. Ex John Follows collection, ‘From an old collection at Faringdon, Oxon.’ RARE
Even by Celtic standards of boastfulness, Bodvoc’s gold stater must rank around the top of British braggadocio behaviour. Whereas the obverse of previous gold staters in Britain had been reserved for sacred Apollo-Belenus imagery (with the exception of Tincomarus staters), Bodvoc puts himself in that godly place. Dr Philip de Jersey says: “There seems to be a general consensus now that Bodvoc was the first ruler to add his name to the western coinage, boldly replacing the (?)ash tree which had previously decorated the stater coinage. The use of a personal name in this style bears some similarity to the ‘branding’ adopted by Tincomarus and Tasciovanos on their later gold coinages, and perhaps gives us a very approximate date for Bodvoc, say c.25 BC-5 BC” (Chris Rudd List 94, July 2007, 2-3). The king’s full name may have been Bodvocoveros ‘Giant Battle-Crow’. John Follows’ fabulous Bodvoc Bold stater displays the brash bragging regal brand name better than most other specimens we’ve seen. Spink’s superb Bodvoc, 24.3.2020, Lot 1, “arguably amongst the best extant,” sold for £7,500, and deservedly. Follows’ bowl-you-over Bodvoc, not quite as bold as Spink’s, will nevertheless stand out in a tray full of staters, such is its intrinsic quality and eye appeal. How to bid via Internet.Our Auction is conducted online via www.the-saleroom.com If you wish to bid you must ‘Create an account’ and you will receive an email link confirmation of Registration. This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction. If you are a new bidder in our sale, please provide numismatic credit references and credit/debit card details to secure any bids you may place.
