Description
Addedomaros Floral Spiral. Sills class 1b, Shell Whorl, obv. die 2. c.45-20 BC. Gold stater. 20mm. 5.60g. Two solid opposed crescents, cusps retorted with pellet at each end; inside each crescent a chevron compartment with arrow and pellets./ Globular horse right, spiral sun and ringed-pellet above ringed-pellets around, branch below, [A]DDEDOM[AROS] around. ABC 2511, VA 1635 var., BMC 2409-11, DK 484, S 202. Scintillating EF, beautifully struck in gorgeous golden gold, smooth flawless surfaces, magnificent inscription. Found near Hilton, Cambs. RARE type, UNIQUE? reverse die.
Dr John Sills says: “The obverse device of back-to-back crescents filled with a projecting chevron and pellet design is novel, and resembles nothing so much as a pair of seashells” (DK, p.520). That’s true, but the chevrons may also be a Druid symbol of divine creative power. As noted in War Coins of the Sun Warriors (Chris Rudd, 2018) p.22-23, and Talking Heads (Chris Rudd List 117, May 2011), p.2-4, many old traditions say the cosmos was created by Sound. We think the chevrons on this gold stater may symbolise this creative Sound, not because they look like the awen sign of Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg, 1747-1826) or the Breton tribann, but because the radiating lines are suggestive of lunary energy (more often solar energy) spreading from a central source. Similar to the Sumerian tau cross, the Egyptian ankh (hieroglyph for ‘life’) and Shiva’s trident, this Celtic chevron can also be seen on Corieltavian Domino staters (ABC 1758) and on other North Thames coins (ABC 2243, 2300, 2398, 2401, 2448-54). Chevrons must have had added appeal (no pun intended) for Addedomaros because, when inverted, they resemble the letter A; which may be why so many of his coins carry chevrons and V-signs (ABC 2508, 2520-23, 2535, 2547). Dr John Sills suggests that “Addedomaros brought in an engraver familiar with the Gallo-Latin alphabet specifically to put his name on coins” (DK, p.251). We agree. The inscription on this stater is of incredibly high quality.
