Corded Crescents. c.55-45 BC. Gold quarter stater. 9mm. 1.01g. Two snakelike corded crescents, forming six hidden faces, double ring above and below with three corded lines./ Lanky annulate belted horse right, ringed-pellet and beaded double ring above, ring below. ABC−, VA−, BMC−, DK 289, S−. CCI 19.2910 (this coin). Good EF, neat flan of rich rose-gold, sharp strike, bonny horse. Found near Little Shoddesden, Hants., 17 May 2018. EXCESSIVELY RARE only two others recorded.
This immaculate and highly imaginative Corded Crescents quarter stater is one of the great gold rarities of the Southern Region. The first was unearthed over seven years ago near Newbury, Berkshire (CCI 12.0386). The second was found on 7 March 2014 near Winchester, Hants (CCI 14.0601). Neither is as beautiful nor as well centred as this one which was found – also in Hampshire – by metdet Dean Whale who says: “At first I thought I had found a very nice Celtic silver unit; however as I gently rubbed the soil away, I saw that it was in fact a gold quarter stater! I had the biggest grin ever… Of the three known coins, my one is by far the best example, adding to the thrill. I look at this little coin every day and still smile broadly” (Treasure Hunting, October 2018, p.11). Dr John Sills writes: “The obverse has features in common with several Hampshire types that feature enlarged sections of early obverse designs, and was probably issued alongside Crescents and Corded Arms half units, ABC 974, which have a very similar obverse…The cording is unusual but paralleled on Cheesefoot Head staters, ABC 761” (Divided Kingdoms, Chris Rudd 2017, p.210). Corded Crescents is a comparatively new type of quarter stater, uncatalogued by Celtic Coinage of Britain (1989), British Iron Age coins in the British Museum (1996), Ancient British Coins (2010), nor even by the latest edition of Spink’s Coins of England (2019). This is only the second specimen to be offered for public sale; the first was sold by us five years ago for £2,000 (Chris Rudd List 137, September 2014, no.10).
