Wonersh Whorls. c.50-40 BC. Celtic gold quarter stater. 10mm. 1.00g.
Wonersh Whorls. c.50-40 BC. Gold quarter stater. 10mm. 1.00g. Crossed wreath motif with two back-to-back crescents in centre, solar whorls, yoke shapes and pellets in angles./ Full-bodied horse left, beaded mane, bridle rein on chest and neck, floral sun above and below, ringed-pellet in front. ABC−, VA−, BMC−, DK−, S−. PAS: SUR-522306 (this coin). EF, sharply struck in dark rose gold, well ornamented, bold horse. Found Andover, Hampshire, 6 May 2019. A new type, previously unpublished and apparently UNIQUE?
Since 1991 Chris Rudd Ltd has introduced collectors to literally hundreds of new types of Ancient British coins – hundreds more than any other dealer or auction house has. When metal detectorists discover what they believe may be a previously unknown type, chances are they will come to us to identify it and sell it for them. The latest is the Wonersh Whorls gold quarter stater, struck by an unknown ruler in the Southern Region and found only six months ago by metal detectorist, Alex Taciu. Congratulations, Alex! We have named it ‘Wonersh Whorls’ firstly because the obverse cruciform motif is obviously very close to that of Wonersh gold staters (ABC 527) and secondly because there is a solar whorl in two of the angles of the obverse cross. This is an important new type because it helps to determine which Wonersh-style quarter staters were issued alongside which Wonersh-style staters. As Dr John Sills explains, this new and hitherto unpublished Wonersh Whorls is “a so-far unique variant of the Wonersh Left type, ABC 617, but with whorls rather than hair curls in two of the angles of the wreath, very bold pellets above and below the central crescents and a row of fine pellets between them. The latest Wonersh staters have similar bold pellets with a pellet line between (see DK 198) and this new type helps to fix the position of Wonersh quarters in relation to the staters” (pers.comm. 10.8.2019). Have you noticed that the central crescents form two forlorn little hidden faces? Published in Coin News, November 2019 (this coin).
