Description
L.Roscius Fabatus. Rome, c.64 BC (David Sear says: ‘This extensive issue is assigned to 62 BC by Harlan on the basis of hoard evidence’). Silver denarius serratus. 18mm. 3.90g. Head of Juno Sospita right wearing goatskin headdress, L. ROSCI below, laurel branch behind./ Female figure standing right, feeding snake coiled erect before her, FABATI in exergue. Sear RCV 363, Crawford 412/1 (symbol pair 60), CRR 915, RSC Roscia 3. Brilliant EF, mint-state condition, scintillating silver with iridescent tones, lustrous surfaces. Ex William F Stevens collection, ex Chris Rudd List 67, January 2003, no.38, ex Leu Numismatik auction 83, 7 May 2002, lot 665, ex Mesagne hoard, Brindisi province, Apulia, south-east Italy, c.1980.
Dr Alan Walker says: “The coinage of L.Roscius was characterized by the use of an exceptionally elaborate system of control marks.” The laurel branch behind the head is one of many such symbols used by this Roman Republican moneyer and, as it happens, is the one that was apparently copied by the Icenian engravers of the Norfolk God types. Dr Philip de Jersey says: “This is almost certainly the inspiration for the obverse of the Norfolk God silver unit; and perhaps, along with other Republican denarii, the source of much of the Iceni’s silver supplies.” A contemporary imitation of the same denarius, struck by the Eravisci tribe of Hungary, also shows a laurel branch. Derek Allen also spotted this and said it proved that the Fabatus denarius was the prototype for the Icenian head (The Coins of the Iceni, Britannia 1, 1970, p.9). The Juno Sospita denarii of L.Roscius Fabatus are very common. However, those with a laurel branch behind the head are not nearly so common and the one above is easily the finest we’ve ever seen offered for sale.
