Epaticcus Corn Ear Warrior. Sills class 1, dies 3/6. c.AD25-40. Gold stater. 16mm. 5.32g. Central barley ear with [T]AS to left, CIF to right./ Warrior on horse right, holding javelin and shield, EPATI below, C in front, C and V above, beaded border. ABC 1343, VA 575, BMC 2021-23, DK 381, S 355. Scintillating EF, neat round flan of beautiful rose gold, silky smooth surfaces, bold and almost complete inscription. A stunning example, they don’t come much better than this. VERY RARE only 24 others recorded, including 13 in the British Museum, this reverse die EXCESSIVELY RARE only one other recorded.
Epaticcus (‘Leader of Horseman’) was, in our view, a blood-son of King Tasciovanos and brother of Cunobelinus. Unlike his nephew Caratacus (‘The Beloved’) who will always be remembered as an early British folk hero and freedom fighter, Epaticcus is something of an unsung hero of the Catuvellaunian royal family. If Epaticcus hadn’t crossed the Thames and captured Calleva (Silchester) before Caratacus, it is questionable whether Caratacus would have been able to dislodge King Verica as quickly as he apparently did. For more information about Epaticcus we strongly recommend you acquire a personal copy of Dr John Sills’ Divided Kingdoms (Chris Rudd, 2017) and read pages 774-775.

How to bid via Internet.Our eAuction is conducted online via www.the-saleroom.com If you wish to bid you must ‘Create an account’ and you will receive an email link confirmation of Registration. This must be activated prior to bidding. You must register to bid for each auction. If you are a new bidder in our sale, please provide numismatic credit references and credit/debit card details to secure any bids you may place. Bidding increments. Lots will be sold to the highest bidder for the winning bid. Bidding automatically increases in fixed increments, so you can enter your maximum bid and let our system do the bidding for you. Please ensure your bids comply with the steps outlined below:
