Gallo-Belgic Broad Flan. Left Type with Flat-Topped Cloak Fastener. Sills Ab1, class 7. Bellovaci. c.115-100 BC. Large-flan gold stater. 20mm. 7.18g. Flamboyant wreathed bust l, with elaborate hairstyle and flat-topped cloak fastener./ Stylised horse l, charioteer above, rosette below, vestigial chariot wheel behind. ABC 4 var., LT 7886 var., DT 68, Scheers/GB class VIII d, VA 12 var., Sills 301-303, S 2. Attractive VF, heavyweight stater, large round flan of golden gold, nicely toned, with clear face and flamboyant hairstyle, well centred horse and rosette visible. Found in Kent. Rare
Note: Found near Folkestone, Kent, a couple of years ago, this rare Class 7 gold stater (the first we’ve had) is in very pleasing condition with only minimal signs of wear and no nasty blemishes. Apollo’s face can be clearly seen and the large flan affords a generous view of his remarkable curling hairlocks. Class 7 staters are distinguished by the flat-topped cloak fastener on the obverse and the single rosette on the reverse, with an x-like ornament to the right of the horse’s rump. Class 7 is the final group in the left-facing Broad Flan series, with a re-designed obverse die. Dr John Sills records four or five others from Kent, the first possibly discovered at Sandwich, c.1761, and recorded by Stukeley.
