Lambourn Dragon Half. AR half unit. 10mm. 0.33g. Double headed serpent in shape of reversed-S, wheel and four-armed spiral in front, rings around./ Triple-tailed horse l, corded mane, belted on neck and belly, crescentic U-shape motif above. ABC –, VA–, BMC–, S–. New denomination for type, previously unrecorded and unpublished as a fraction. Good VF, good silver, lovely serpent. Of the highest rarity, possibly Unique?

Note: This screamingly scarce Lambourn Dragon silver half unit (probably the only one known) is a puzzling piece because it was struck from the same pair of dies as the full unit (ABC 893) but on a much smaller flan, hence its markedly lower weight (0.33g compared with 0.82g). Despite the smaller flan, this fractional unit reveals details of the reverse not previously seen: the horse has a cabled mane and three strands to its tail, and above the horse we can now see a U-shaped motif composed of three outline crescents which arguably form a grinning hidden face not dissimilar to the ‘death mask’ on the Regini silver unit ABC 707. The Lambourn Dragon unit (ABC 893) – only one example has been recorded (CCI 07.0194) – was found at Lambourn, Berks., in February 2007, and was acquired by the British Museum (BM 2007, 4050.1). Our newly discovered half unit – the first Lambourn Dragon to be offered for public sale – was found only sixteen miles away at Avebury, Wilts., in September 2014. These two findspots suggest that the Lambourn Dragon type may be attributed to the East Wiltshire or Berkshire group rather than the Hampshire Belgae where it presently resides, albeit with uncertainty.
