Bodvoc Bold. c.25-5BC. Celtic gold stater. 18mm. 5.48g.
Bodvoc Bold. c.25-5BC. AV stater. 18mm. 5.48g. BODVOC on plain field./ Triple-tailed horse r, two ringed-pellets and crescent above forming hidden sad face, pellets under tail, tiny x’s around, wheel below. ABC 2039, VA 1052, BMC 3135-42, S 388. Near EF, scintillating rose gold, smooth surfaces, virtually full Bodvoc. Rare
Note: The most striking aspect of this impressive gold stater is the manner in which it was inscribed. Looking at the obverse – even glancing at it casually from a distance of two feet – there is no doubt who issued this brashly branded coin. Bodvoc was the first Dobunnic ruler to place his name on coins. Like Tincomarus south of the Thames (ABC 1055-61) and Tasciovanos north of the Thames (ABC 2577-80) he did so hugely, boldly and boastfully. The name BODVOC (‘the battle-crow’) is beautifully engraved in large Roman capitals right across the centre of the otherwise blank field. Very often, on a smaller flan than this, one or more letters are absent from view. On this superlative specimen just the top of the first letter is missing. An almost complete three-tailed horse can be seen on the other side of the coin, with a well-struck eight-spoked wheel below and a ‘sad’ little face above with a downturned mouth. It is fascinating to note that this ‘sad’ little face is exclusively Catuvellaunian in origin and that it was copied directly from the gold staters of Tasciovanos (ABC 2550-53, 2559-62) and Andoco (ABC 2715) – one of the clues which makes me think that Bodvoc could well have been a prince of the Catuvellauni, an idea first put forward by Dr John Sills in 2003 (J.Sills, Dobunnic staters: a new sequence, Chris Rudd List 72, November 2003, p.4-7).
